Jump rings are used in most pieces of jewellery and are used to join elements together as well as for clasps. However, using jump rings can be challenging to use and can present a range of problems. This guide gives advise for when the most common problems occur.
Most common problems with jump rings typically involve:
Ring is "out of round" or distorted
Problem: The jump ring was opened by pulling the ends apart, distorting its round shape.
Solution: Use two pairs of pliers to gently twist the ring back into a perfectly round shape, bringing the ends together to create a snug closure.
Ring doesn't close securely (leaves a gap): The ends of the ring are not properly aligned, or they are not pushed together tightly enough.
Solution: Hold the sides of the opened jump ring with two pairs of pliers. Move the ends back and forth, applying slight pressure, until they meet perfectly with no gap between them. A well-closed jump ring will have a seamless finish.
Ring has an "overbite": One end of the jump ring is higher than the other, which can happen with thin, high-aspect-ratio wire or improper closing.
Solution: Continue the "pushing up and down" motion from the previous point. Wiggle the ring while pushing down on the side that is up and lifting up on the side that was down.
Ring is weak and breaks or pulls apart: The jump ring wire is too soft, not properly work-hardened, or the wrong gauge for the project.
Solution: Use high-quality, properly work-hardened jump rings. Select a jump ring with a sufficiently strong gauge (thickness) for the weight of the components it will hold.
Tips for preventing problems
Correct Opening Technique: Always use two pairs of pliers to twist the jump ring open sideways. Never pull the ends apart, as this distorts the ring.
Pliers Position: Make sure your pliers are positioned to overcompensate for any saddle shape and grip in a straight line with the jump ring to avoid accidental distortion.
Choose the Right Size: Select a jump ring that is in proportion to the other components to ensure security and proper closure.
