Using a jump ring opener is a great way to open and close jump rings cleanly and easily, especially when making jewellery. Here's a simple step-by-step guide:

What You’ll Need:

Jump ring opener (a small ring with notches)
Flat-nose or chain-nose pliers
Jump rings

Steps to Use a Jump Ring Opener:

1. Wear the Jump Ring Opener

Slip the jump ring opener onto your non-dominant hand's index finger or thumb like a ring. Make sure the notches (slits) in the opener are facing up and easy to access.

2. Grip the Jump Ring

Use pliers in your dominant hand to hold one side of the jump ring. Slide the jump ring into one of the notches in the opener so that the other side is secured in the notch.

3. Twist to Open

Gently twist the jump ring sideways using the pliers and the opener. Do not pull apart the jump ring (which can weaken or distort it). Always twist sideways.

4. Attach Your Component

Slide on whatever you’re adding — a chain, charm, clasp, etc.

5. Twist to Close

Reverse the twisting motion to bring the ends back together. Make sure the ends are tightly aligned and flush.

Tips:

Choose the notch size in the opener that best matches your jump ring. You can also use two pliers instead of a ring opener, but the opener makes it quicker.
