How to use Gimp Wire

Gimp wire, also known as French wire or bullion wire, is a fine, coiled wire traditionally used in jewellery making to protect threads or beading wires from wear and tear, especially at clasp connections. It adds a professional finish and enhances durability.

How to Use Gimp Wire (French Wire) in Jewellery Making when making a necklace or bracelet:

Materials Needed:

  • Gimp wire (French wire)
  • Beading thread or wire (ie silk, nylon, or flexible beading wire)
  • Jewellery clasp
  • Crimp beads (if using beading wire)
  • Beads or pearls
  • Scissors or thread cutters
  • Beading needle (if using thread)

Step 1: Cut the Gimp Wire
Cut a small length of gimp wire, around 5-7 mm (the length should just be enough to form a small loop over the clasp ring).

Step 2: Thread the Gimp Wire
Thread the end of your beading wire or thread through the small piece of gimp wire. The gimp wire should form a smooth arch or loop.

Step 3: Attach the Clasp
Pass the wire/thread (with the gimp wire on it) through the clasp ring. The gimp wire should sit neatly over the clasp ring, creating a protective barrier between the clasp and the beading thread. Use a jump ring on the clasp if the hole is not big enough for the gimp wire to pass through. String on your beads.

Step 4: Secure the Connection
Once you reach the end, thread on a small piece of gimp wire and add on the other part of your clasp, for example a jump ring or split ring. Pass the wire/thread back through the last few beads or through a crimp bead (if using beading wire). If using beading thread, make several tight knots and hide them inside nearby beads. If using beading wire, crimp the crimp bead securely and trim any excess wire.

Benefits of Using Gimp Wire:
Prevents fraying - Protects delicate thread from abrasion caused by clasps or metal findings.

Professional finish - Gives the piece a high-quality, polished look.

Durability - Extends the lifespan of the jewellery.

Tips:
Use appropriate size gimp wire for your thread or wire thickness. It should fit snugly without being too tight.

Gimp wire is especially useful when stringing pearls or delicate beads on silk thread.
